Buena Vista

In a song recorded in 1915 in Loíza, the following coro can he heard:

Mi querida eeees
mi querida eeees
en el cuartel de Buena Vista
Sánchez, yo la saludé

(JA Mason Recordings (1915): 68. SCY 4223, no. 3)

It is impossible to know with certainty what location this song refers to since there are various places in Puerto Rico with that name. The most likely place given its geographic proximity to Loíza would be Central Buena Vista in the Barrio Hoyo Mulas which lies in the area between the old town of Carolina and the Piñones region of Loíza. Buena Vista began processing sugar in 1882 and shuttered in 1911 (see photos of location and remaining structures below).

Other alternative locations include:

-Hacienda Buena Vista in Arecibo, which operated a sugar trapiche between approximately 1846 and 1902.

-Hacienda Buena Vista in Peñuelas , which operated a sugar trapiche between approximately 1835 and 1902.

Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce, which was a large coffee hacienda that partly relied on enslaved Africans or Antilleans.
