Per his marriage record to Leonor Atiles Aviles dated August 5, 1902, Modesto reported being 26 years old, being originally from Loiza, and living at that time in the capital city of San Juan. He identifies his parents as don Manuel and Doña Carolina. He had five known children with Leonor: Modesta (about 1901), Lucia (1904-1931), Manuel (1906-1919), Rafael (1908-1996), and Carmelo (1910-1912). His wife Leonor died on February 16, 1912 of tuberculosis (per her own death record); their youngest child Carmelo died only a few months later at the age of 2 on August 17, 1912 (per his death record).
